Unveiling "The Gift": A Celebration of Stories and Stewardship
This summer, the Paperhand Puppet Project is set to captivate audiences with its newest production, "The Gift." This engaging performance will run from August 15 to September 28 at the historic Forest Theatre on the University of North Carolina campus, followed by additional performances at the Diana Wortham Center in Asheville on November 7-9.
Artistry Meets Environmental Advocacy
The Paperhand Puppet Project has spent 25 summers bringing joy and thought-provoking narratives to North Carolina. Co-founder Donovan Zimmerman emphasizes the importance of storytelling, stating, "Stories move like water. They are both so powerful in every direction." This year, the focus is particularly on women who are vital protectors of our oceans and waterways, featuring figures like Dr. Crystal Cavalier-Keck and Elaine Chiosso. Through vivid puppetry, the production aims to nurture people's connection to nature while exploring the complexities of human interactions with the environment.
A Sensory Spectacle
"The Gift" promises an awe-inspiring sensory experience for attendees of all ages. Expect to see enormous puppets, illuminated marine creatures, and live music from a seven-piece band, creating an immersive atmosphere. Among the enchanting spectacles is a 60-foot-wide Ocean Goddess, poised to steal the show among playful beavers and a majestic glowing whale, all performed by a dynamic team of 30 artists.
The Power of Community and Connection
This production encapsulates the organization’s mission to inspire connections through art. Paperhand’s work stands as a reminder of the powerful narratives that shape our understanding of the world and our role within it. In a time when environmental issues are at the forefront of global discourse, “The Gift” offers a unique lens on stewardship, equity, and the abundant strength found in storytelling.
